Puerto, Chiapas, Mexico

Tuesday, 4 Feb 2020 – The ship was scheduled to dock at Puerto Chiapas at 8:00 AM.  Puerto Chiapas is a small port town that serves as a gateway to that part of Mexico.  The port entrance lies about 8.1 miles northwest of the mouth of the Suchiate River which is the international boundary between Mexico and Guatemala.  Upgrades by the government since 2005 have added facilities for cruise ships and more heavy cargo.  Ships of Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, Norwegian, Oceania, and Princess Cruise Lines now stop at Port Chiapas.  However, most of the attractions and archaeological sites are located outside Puerto Chiapas, in or near the town of Tapachula.
On the Pier
After breakfast, we went for a swim.  There were several passengers standing in the pool.  Jesse mostly conversed with the other passengers, while Sally swam.  He met Jim who now lives in Florida, but lived in several other places before finally settling there.  At lunch, we sat with Marvin and Liz.  Afterwards, Jesse went ashore for a few minutes to a nice pavilion with shops and local instrumental and dance performances.  Sally opted to stay onboard.
We danced again in the Horizons before dinner, where we met Abigail & Carl, who recently moved to Chicago from Washington, DC.  Although Abigail is unable to walk long distances, she does fine on the stairs; therefore, she climbs the stairs for exercise.
