Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 – We docked at Santo Tomas at 8:00 AM. Guatemala is a central American country south of Mexico. It is home to volcanoes, rainforests and ancient Mayan cities. Santo Tomas is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala, and lies at Amatique Bay off the Gulf of Honduras and is administratively a part of Puerto Barrios. The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. In 2006, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santos Tomas started receiving cruise ships, which have been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry.
We enjoyed our usual breakfast in the Terrace
Café. We saw Keith and Carol there for
the first time since the Captain’s Cocktail Celebration. Sally’s cold had gotten a lot worse, and she
had developed a fever. Jesse gave her
medication to bring down her fever and she slept most of the day. It was raining hard all afternoon, so Jesse
decided not to go ashore. He ordered
soup and tea with honey from room service that afternoon, hoping that might
help Sally to feel better. Later, he
ordered dinner from room service. Sally didn’t have much of an appetite, but she
ate a little.
Jesse continued watching TV and work working
on his laptop while Sally was napping.
Again, we skipped dancing for the night!
